The patch modifies the Makefile extensively: it adds shared library creation, installs binaries and libraries with relative links, provides an uninstall make target and adds the correct inline directive for the MIPSPro compiler, which speeds up the binary by 2%
Further compiler optimization is fruitless and leaves you with a bigger, slower binary.

This package has dual support for both mips3 and mips4 architecture, controlled by the mach(CPUARCH=R4000) switch for libraries and executables.
